CyrusOne wins Coveted Award for Work in Healthcare Technology Industry

May 12, 2003

Houston, TX

CyrusOne, a data center provider specializing in mission-critical IT applications was awarded the What Works award in the May issue of Health Management Technology (HMT) for outsourcing IT management and monitoring to improve access, speed and capacity assisting Horizon 20, a Houston-based radiology group that provides an on-call service to more than 50 hospitals and radiology practices throughout the country.

HMT readers rely on What Works case histories to profile healthcare IT in working environments like hospitals, clinics, integrated delivery networks, physician practices and payer offices—and to tell them, in quantifiable terms, which technology works. HMT publishes between 15 and 25 What Works case histories annually. At the end of the year, impanel judges gather from across the healthcare IT spectrum to read and evaluate all What Works articles published during the calendar year, and to determine the top three winners and honorable mention awards from among that year’s contenders.

Judges are asked to score each case history on five weighted criteria:

  • Benefits to the user
  • Applicability
  • Installation, implementation and ease of adoption
  • Scalability
  • Creative challenge

CyrusOne became a critical element of the success at Horizon Radiology in early 1999 when Horizon hired Houston-based I.T. Works, a consulting firm and systems integrator that specializes in complex networking solutions and applications, to review its system. I.T. Works designed an infrastructure for the system, based on the Microsoft Windows 2000 server platform and utilizing the group’s current imaging software. It created software packages that allow the systems to run reliably with multiple points of connection, with additional outsourcing of services to Houston-based CyrusOne. CyrusOne would host 10 of the group’s servers that run various software packages, three large routers, two Virtual Private Networks and a firewall, and CyrusOne would continuously monitor the system and alert the I.T. Works staff if there was a problem.

In August 2001, I.T. Works and CyrusOne developed and deployed the solution within a 60-day window, allowing Horizon to realize benefits immediately including:

• Constant reliability. The system is guaranteed 100 percent uptime because of CyrusOne’s power and network redundancies.

  • Constant reliability. The system is guaranteed 100 percent uptime because of CyrusOne’s power and network redundancies.
  • Increased productivity. The radiologists can route an image to other doctors for simultaneous viewing and consultation.
  • Customer convenience. When a radiologist is ill or on vacation, images are sent to a central location and forwarded to another radiologist accordingly.
  • Greater reach. Virtually any hospital is compatible with the multiple points of connectivity.
  • Increased flexibility. Horizon has the ability to simultaneously service up to 12 dial-up lines, four ISDN lines, 12 point-to-point T1 lines and 100 VPNs.
  • Staff implications. The group has seamlessly doubled its number of radiologists.
  • Outsource savings. Horizon has realized a 10-to-1 savings by outsourcing vs. implementing an internal solution, spending less than half the cost of employing one full-time network engineer.

Through these cost savings and increased capacity, Horizon Radiology’s business has increased more than 200 percent since partnering with I.T. Works and CyrusOne, while its expenses have only increased 50 percent.
